Seriousness sets in as the temperature drops. It always does. But don’t let that sense of urgency overtake you and let you make bad decisions. Put it aside, relax a little, and concentrate on the important stuff, defining your priorities according the conditions. With our camp set, our next priority is FIRE. It is a huge morale builder, dries out clothes and warms feet, provides heat, and cooks food. But in 25ºF and heavy snowpack, the fire doesn’t make itself and it takes a lot of work. That’s what this part of “Winter Sense” shows as I instruct the Scouts (all wilerness craft rookies) in the art of snowy firemaking. In an academic environment, firemaking seems easy. As always in TNP, I debunk that and show methods that are proven to work. Along the way we use the fire tools that make it all possible and I stress safety constantly. Available on this trip are the Cold Steel Trailmaster in Carbon 5, Ontario SP-50, Ontario Kukri, Gransfors Bruks 23″ and CS Trail Boss axes, and a big ole 30″ timber saw. The boys opt out of using the axes when offered, probably due to the huge energy needed to crosscut with them (all were tired) and the deep powder we operate in. You want to minimize work and calorie expenditure. A hike with sled in tow finds a standing dead wood candidate and I supervise the fall and processing with the knives. Later a few campfire stories ensue as we get warm again. In “Winter Sense,” these Scouts get a good taste of real winter camping and the work that it …
Any good experience with the ontario kukri?
Dear Nutnfancy… I have only recently (within the last couple of months) become introduced to TNP and I must that I am VERY impressed with you knife reviews. I located TNP while searching for reviews on a good survival knife and have since purchased three that you recommended. I just wanted to take a moment to say that I am very proud of the work you do for our country and especially the young people such as those in this video. It is commendable what you are doing.
12:20 you can see a freaking sign… that is some TALL snow. is there going to be a part 3?
@militaryteck actually your giving it both. Heres a lil homework for you. Go google how much carbon dioxide & oxygen humans breathe out. You’ll find that theres a percentage of oxygen that our lungs don’t absorb each time we breathe, hence why CPR works on other humans as your giving them the left over oxygen that was still in your lungs to resusitate them.
if you blow on a fire your not giving it oxygen your giving it carbon dioxide .
We were always told on campouts to make sure that your area was clear 360 degrees around and clear overhead before swinging any axe, but since you were just stripping limbs off and not doin too much overhead swinging that’s cool. a fellow scout forget to do so on a trip wound up w/a quarter in. of the axe blade crammed in the cranium after it snagged on limbs above him. luckily w/20 stiches later he was ok, whew glad it wasn’t worse, needless to say he never forgot that trip.
At minutes 12:15 ir u look to the left of the screen, there is a sgin or somthing. a no parking. lol.
In reality, couldn’t you split up the group (depending on the size of the group) and have one set up camp and the other gather wood? I guess this would also be dependent on how close dry wood is and if you are in a combat situation as well, but couldn’t that be done?
Bro dude! Where’s Pt. 3? Don’t leave me hangin’! LOL! Honestly though, I’m really looking forward to the next part of this.
Keep up the great work Nutn. You are DEFINITELY appreciated!
I wish I knew where you went. I am a scoutmaster here in Utah, and am always looking for a good place to take them winter camping. Anyways, I think it is excellent that you are taking the time to pass the knowledge to the younger generation. Excellent video.
@darksamuari They might be doing maintenance. Try again tommorrow and it might work. If that doesn’t work, use another browser and try that. Google Chrome and Foxfire work well. — Veri (Nutn’s sister)
Everytime I try to sub to you it says YouTube is unavailable which if that was true I wouldn’t even be on the channel please help?
Hope the final part is up soon !
The whole world seems brighter around a camp fire!
hey everyone i cant find the third part. can you send me a link to it plzzzz
Where is number three???
When are you uploading the next part? I love watching these adventures!
The name of that Documentary is, “Touching the Void”. Not, “Into the Void”. In case anyone wanted to look it up.
I discovered something interesting with a new bow saw I got. I was having a hard time cutting and couldn’t understand why. So for giggles I turned the blade around and presto… made it much easier to cut. Go figure.
new subscriber here! great videos. you can really never stop learning about how to kick butt in the wild
Ipods and mobile phones are helpfull you maniac. <3
I WANT TO BUY THE RTAK II WHERE CAN I FIND IT I LOOK IN AMAZON BUT IT SEEMS THAT IT DOESNT COME WITH THE SHEATH I THINK THEY GIVE YOU ONLY THE KNIFE.
Haaaaaah i remember a friend doing the exact same thing with the exact same boot during a winter camp just like this one. The boot melted, and he had a big hole in it. We had fun tearing it and burning it in the dying fire for flames. Hopefully we were a few miles from home and he could walk with all the spare socks and the inner lining of the boot back home!
Lol with every bowsaw i had problems due to shitty blade twisting, having a 20° cut. I have an amazing pocket japanese folding saw that blowed through a foot wide slab of wood!
@ConkerzxBFD I think nutn hides his subs because he doesn’t want them to be criticized by armchair elitists. He has always said that while he appreciates the subscriptions, they’re not the end all goal to TNP. He doesn’t care how many subscribers he has, he appreciates them, but he focuses on making TNP better.
