David Malpass for the GOP The New York Sun | June 4, 2010 The good news out of the New York State Republican Party convention is that there is going to be a primary to make the final choice for a nominee to oppose Senator Gillibrand in November — and our endorsement is David Malpass. He came within a whisker of getting the most votes in the state convention. The candidate who edged him was Bruce Blakeman, who, when he was a county legislator, oversaw the disastrous tax hike that delivered Nassau County to the Democrats for a decade. The two will face one another in a primary in September. The reason this is good news is that the Republican Party in New York State needs an airing of the issues. This was evident after the convention, when Mr. Blakeman characterized Mr. Malpass, a former official in the Reagan administration and one of the most articulate free-market economists in the world, as the “champagne- and-caviar candidate,” in sharp contradistinction to his own description of himself as the “beer and pizza” candidate. To which we say that if New Yorkers want to go in for the sport of nursing class grudges, they might as well stick with the Democrats, who have made that a specialty while delivering New York State to its current governmental crisis. Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter and miserly outdated moneylender, holds everything that embodies the joys and spirit of Christmas in contempt, preserving to himself and being nasty to individuals. Scrooge’s buisness companion Jacob Marley has died and Scrooge is paying a man for his coffin. He pays him a rather modest quantity and leaves. He walks throughout Victorian England, and as he passes men and women by everyone turns into quiet and frightend. He walks into his location of buisness and slams the door shut. 7 Christmas Eve’s later, he is nonetheless as bitter as he was before. He has an worker named Cratchit who is extremely poor and may barley manage meals for his household. Scrooges nephew walks in to the store and asks to join him for dinner at his home, scrooge offers him an unfriendly christmas hum-bug and tells him to leave. Closing time comes and Cratchit leaves. Scrooge closes up store and goes home. That evening, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former enterprise associate, Jacob Marley, who is now forced to spend his afterlife carrying hefty chains forged from his own greedy techniques. Scrooge seems to be out the window and sees many extra ghosts suffering the exact same fate. Marley warns Scrooge that he will endure an even worse fate if he does not repent, and foretells that he will be haunted by 3 spirits that will assist guide him. The initial spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Previous, a tiny ghost made of fire, exhibits Scrooge visions of his own past …
